The Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother

Eve was the first woman created, and she was created from the rib of Adam, the first man, to be his helpmate.  She ended up disobeying God’s only Commandment to both of them not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and evil.  Then, she led Adam to do the same.  They were both kicked out of the Garden of Eden, and Heaven was closed to them and to all of their descendants until Jesus, God The Son, died on The Cross to pay Adam’s debt of sin to God.  There is not a complete correlation between Adam and Eve and Jesus Christ and The Blessed Virgin Mary, but The Blessed Virgin Mary was created to make up to God for Eve’s betrayal of Him and the human race.

Through a wonderful series of books, which give visions of our Blessed Lady appearing to a Spanish nun, Venerable Mary of Agreda, called The Mystical City of God, we can find out many things, which we might not have previously known about our Lady and The Holy Family.  These four volumes were written in the 1600’s and approved by several Popes.  Ven. Fr. Solanus Casey prescribed reading these volumes for “spiritual health”.  One of the things I read was about the test, which God put the Angels through before the loyal ones were allowed to go to Heaven.  They were given a vision of the future.  They were shown that God The Son, Who was Spirit, was going to take the Form of a human man, which was a being much less perfect than an Angel, to begin with.  Then, our Lord showed that He was also going to be born of a Human Mother, and that was too much for lucifer — he shouted, “I will NOT serve!”  “Non serviat!”  This caused the war between the one third of the angels, who were dumb enough to follow lucifer, and the the two thirds of the Angels, who followed Saint Michael and remained loyal to God.  We can see where evil came from, through this account, and why Adam and Eve fell so easily if a perfect Angel could fall so fast.

As The Mother of God had to be completely sinless and even be immune to all temptations to sin, as God is, our Lord chose carefully the Parents of The Blessed Virgin Mary:  Sts. Anne & Joachim, who were elderly, when our Blessed Lady was conceived in St. Anne’s Womb.  God created The Blessed Virgin without sin, by redeeming Her in advance.  He applied The Infinite Merits of His Son’s Future Sacred Death on The Cross to Her, as He created Her, so that She would make a worthy Mother for Him.  Even after The Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived immaculately in Saint Anne’s womb, God kept raising Her higher and higher, grace-wise, to prepare Her to be His Son’s Mother.

Even though our Blessed Lady is human, She is the most highly graced being ever to exist, even more so than the Angels.  God chose to come through a Human Mother, to make Himself a Prisoner in Her Womb, for nine months, when He could have chosen to take the Form of a full-grown Man.  (A lot of this information was obtained from St. Louis M. de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary.)  According to St. Louis de Montfort, Jesus gave His Father more glory by making Himself subject/obedient to His Mother on earth, for thirty years than He could ever have done by showing His Power and performing incredible miracles to convince others that He Was God.  Our Lord humbled Himself to make up for Adam’s sin of pride; our Lord obeyed, even though He was and still is in control of the universe, to make up for Adam’s sin of disobedience.  But, His Mother had to be sinless in order for Him to be obedient to Her in their Family Life together.  Our Lord gave His Mother so many gifts and graces, but She was so humble that She wanted to be almost invisible to others — She wanted others to get attention and honor, but not She.  She understood the danger of honor, which can often lead to pride, the root of most sins.  She, Her Son, God, Himself, and St. Joseph led hidden lives for most of their lives here on earth.  But, now our Lord does want His Mother to be known, honored, revered, loved, imitated, and petitioned, as She should be.  Jesus would not have come to earth to redeem us if She had told Holy Archangel Gabriel, “No,” when he asked Her to become The Mother of God.  She could have done so, as St. Joseph could have had Her stoned to death, for becoming Pregnant with a Baby, Which was not his.  Instead, She chose to give an unconditional “Fiat” to our Lord’s Plan for Her, then, and at all times after that, as well.  She did God’s Will perfectly and did not deserve to die, because She never had sin on Her Soul, and She never sinned.

In The Eastern Church, our Lady’s Dormition is celebrated — dormition, meaning “falling asleep”, which is how our Lord referred to those, who died, but did not go to hell.  In The Roman Catholic Church, Her Glorious Assumption into Heaven is celebrated.  The Church has never said that our Most Blessed Lady did not die, even though She did not deserve to die.  According to Ven. Mary of Agreda, when our Blessed Lady was 72 years old, our Lord asked if She willed to die or not, because it was time for Her to leave this world.  She said that She wanted to die in order to imitate Her Divine Son perfectly, so He took away a special protection, which was helping to keep Her Alive, and She died of Love.  On the third day, when St. Peter and St. John were still by Her Tomb, our Blessed Lady’s Sacred Soul was returned to Her Sacred, Incorrupt Body, and She was assumed Sacred Body and Soul into Heaven by Her rejoicing, Holy Angels to take Her Place at Her Divine Son’s Right Hand.

As our Lord chose to come to earth through The Blessed Virgin Mary, and She participated in His Joys and Sorrows as much as possible, our Lord chooses to give any graces, which are given to us, through Her Immaculate Hands, as She is our Holy Mediatrix of all Graces, an old Title for Her, which Feast is on June 1st.  The main reason, that The Most Holy Rosary is so powerful, is because we are meditating either between each “Hail, Mary” in the decade or in the middle of each “Hail, Mary”, on The Most Important Moments of our Lord’s Life here on earth.  Also, in the “Hail, Mary”, we are asking His Mother to help us to imitate Her Son — you can’t get much better than that!  I ask our Lord directly for many things — maybe I get them, maybe not.  Why?  Because I sin and betray Him.  So, He does not hear me so well, as I am blocked by my sin.  But, when I ask His Close Relatives, as His, Holy, Extended Family:  Saints Mary, Joseph, Anne, and Joachim, I often get quick results.  I have to submit everything to God’s Will, of course, because nothing happens if it is not within His Will.

SALVE, MARIA!

OUR LADY OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT, May 13th:  Novena begins May 4th:

O Virgin Mary, our Lady of The Blessed Sacrament, Thou Glory of the Christian people, Joy of The Universal Church, Salvation of the whole world, pray for us, and awaken in all believers a lively devotion toward The Most Holy Eucharist, that so they may be made worthy to partake of The Same daily.  Amen.

FEAST OF THE  IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY — (Saturday after Feast of The Sacred Heart of Jesus, Movable Feast):

Offering of a Family to Mary:

Most Blessed Virgin, our Immaculate Queen and Mother, Refuge and Consolation of the distressed, prostrate before Thy Throne with all of my family, I choose Thee as my Patroness, my Mother, and my Advocate with God.  I consecrate myself forever, with all that belongs to me, to Thy Service, and I pray Thee, O Mother of God, to receive us into the number of Thy Servants, taking us into Thy Protection, succoring us during life and above all at the hour of death.  Bless me, with all of my family, and permit not that anything in us should ever offend Thy Son.  Protect us in all temptations, deliver us from all dangers, provide for all of our wants, counsel us in all of our doubts, console us in all of our afflictions, assist us in our sickness, and especially in the agonies of death.  Permit not the wicked one to boast of having under his dominion any of us who has been solemnly consecrated to Thee, but grant that we may all be safely brought to Heaven, there to thank Thee, and, with Thee, to love and praise Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, world without end. Amen.

Act of Reparation to The Immaculate Heart of Mary

O Heart of Mary, I honor Thee as The Heart Most Pleasing to our Lord and Most Intimately United to Him.  I love Thee as The Heart of The Best of mothers, and I rejoice in Thy Glorious Prerogatives.  Prostrate before Thee, O heart of Mary, I make Thee this humble act of reparation for all of the outrages, which Thou hast received from me and from all of mankind.  I humbly confess that I have been guilty of the greatest ingratitude towards Thee; but seeing that, through Thee, The Divine Mercy has so often had regard unto me, I venture even yet to hope that Thou wilt not abandon me.  In this sweet confidence I am animated by a most earnest desire to be more faithful and more devoted to Thee.  I pray Thee to accept all of the good that henceforth I am resolved to do, to present it to Thy Dear Son, Jesus, so that, through Thee, my Most Loving Saviour may pour down His Benedictions more and more on me, and on all who are dear unto me.

OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP, June 27th:  Novena begins June 27th:

Behold at Thy Feet, O Mother of Perpetual Help! a wretched sinner, who has recourse to Thee and confides in Thee.  O Mother of Mercy!  Have pity on me.  I hear Thee called by all the Refuge and the Hope of sinners:  be, then, my refuge and my hope.  Assist me, for the love of Jesus Christ; stretch forth Thy Hand to a miserable fallen creature, who recommends himself to Thee, and who devotes himself to Thy Service forever.  I bless and thank Almighty God, Who in Mercy has given me this confidence in Thee, which I hold to be a pledge of my eternal salvation.  It is true that in the past I have miserably fallen into sin, because I had not recourse to Thee.  I know that, with Thy Help, I shall conquer.  I know, too, that Thou wilt assist me if I recommend myself to Thee; but I fear that, in time of danger, I may neglect to call on Thee, and thus lose my soul.  This grace, then, I ask of Thee, and this I beg, with all of the fervor of my soul, that, in all of the attacks of hell, I may ever have recourse to Thee.  O Mary, help me.  O Mother of Perpetual Help, never suffer me to lose my God.

OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL:  July 16th:  Novena begins July 7th:

1st Day (July 7th) O Beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Holy and Singular, who brought forth The Son of God, still ever remaining a Pure Virgin, assist us in our necessity!  O Star of the Sea, help and protect us! Show us that Thou art our Mother! (Pause and mention your petitions.)  Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

2nd Day (July 8th) Most Holy Mary, Our Mother, in Thy Great Love for us Thou gavest us the Holy Scapular of Mount Carmel, having heard the prayers of Thy chosen son, Saint Simon of Stock.  Help us now to wear it faithfully and with devotion.  May it be a sign to us of our desire to grow in holiness.  (Pause and mention your petitions.)   Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

3rd Day (July 9th) O Queen of Heaven, Thou gavest us the Scapular as an outward sign by which we might be known as Thy faithful children.  May we always wear it with honor by avoiding sin and  imitating Thy Virtues. Help us to be faithful to this desire of ours.  (Pause and mention your petitions.)   Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

4th Day (July 10th) When Thou gavest us, O Gracious Lady, the Scapular as our Habit, Thou calledst us to be not only servants, but also Thine Own Children.  We ask Thee to gain for us from Thy Son the grace to live as Thy Children in joy, peace and love.  (Pause and mention your petitions.)  Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

5th Day (July 11th) O Mother of Fair Love, through Thy Goodness, as Thy Children, we are called to live in the spirit of Carmel.  Help us to live in charity with one another, prayerful as Elijah of old,  and mindful of our call to minister to God’s People.  (Pause and mention your petitions.)  Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

6th Day (July 12th) With loving provident care, O Mother Most Amiable, Thou coveredst us with Thy Scapular as a shield of defense against the evil one.  Through Thine Assistance, may we bravely struggle against the powers of evil, always open to Thy Son, Jesus Christ.  (Pause and mention your petitions.)  Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

7th Day (July 13th) O Mary, Help of Christians, Thou assuredst us that wearing Thy Scapular worthily would keep us safe from harm.  Protect us in both body and soul with Thy Continual Aid.  May all that we do be pleasing to Thy Son and to Thee.  (Pause and mention your petitions.)  Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

8th Day (July 14th) Thou givest us hope, O Mother of Mercy, that through Thy Scapular Promise we might quickly pass through the fires of Purgatory to The Kingdom of Thy Son.  Be our comfort and our hope.  Grant that our hope may not be in vain but that, ever faithful to Thy Son and to Thee, we may speedily enjoy after death The Blessed Company of Jesus and the Saints.  (Pause and mention your petitions.)  Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

9th Day (July 15th) O Most Holy Mother of Mount Carmel, when asked by a saint to grant privileges to the family of Carmel, Thou gavest assurance of Thy Motherly Love and Help to those faithful to Thee and to Thy Son.  Behold us, Thy Children. We glory in wearing Thy holy habit, which makes us members of Thy Family of Carmel, through which we shall have Thy powerful protection in life, at death and even after death.  Look down with love, O Gate of Heaven, on all of those now in their last agony!  Look down graciously, O Virgin, Flower of Carmel, on all of those in need of help!  Look down mercifully, O Mother of our Savior, on all of those, who do not know that they are numbered among Thy Children.  Look down tenderly, O Queen of All Saints, on the Poor Souls in Purgatory!  (Pause and mention your petitions.)  Pray slowly & reverently: one “Our Father”, “Hail, Mary” and “Glory Be”.   Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

The Glorious Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Body and Soul, into Heaven: August 15th:  Novena begins August 6th:

NOTE:  August 15th is normally a Holyday of Obligation, to be treated as a Sunday for attending Holy Mass, praying, resting, doing  acts of charity, participating in recreation, etc., but, unfortunately, the Bishops of the U.S., for convenience’s sake, I believe, decided, a few years ago, to take away the obligation of attending Holy Mass for certain movable Feasts, when they land on Monday or Saturday.  Since we, along with almost the whole world, seem to be in a state of crisis, the last thing we need to do is to neglect an important opportunity to seek God’s grace and favor through His Mother, so I would definitely NOT miss Holy Mass on what is normally a Holyday of Obligation, whether it is obligatory or not.  Call the various Catholic churches in your area, during the day, to find out when they will celebrate Holy Mass on August 15th.  There are going to be a few, which will celebrate it in the evening, so that you can get there after work, if you can’t take the day off.

O Virgin Immaculate, Thou, who by a singular privilege of grace wast preserved from original sin, look in pity upon our separated brethren, who are nevertheless Thy children, and call them back to the center of unity.  Not a few of them, although separated from The Church, have kept a certain veneration for Thee; and do Thou, generous as Thou art, reward them for it, by obtaining for them the grace of conversion.  Thou wast conqueror of the infernal serpent from the first instant of Thine existence; renew even now, for it is now more necessary than ever before, Thine ancient triumphs; glorify Thy Divine Son, bring back to Him the sheep, that have strayed from the one fold and place them once more under the guidance of the universal Shepherd, who holds the place of Thy Son on earth; let it be Thy Glory, O Virgin, who destroyest all heresies, to restore unity and peace once more to all the Christian people.”  Amen. (Raccolta #627)

The Catholic Church teaches inerrantly that The Blessed Virgin Mary wast conceived without sin in Her Holy Mother, Saint Anne’s womb, that She imitated Her Son, Jesus, perfectly, and that She never sinned.  Since death is  the reward for sin, she did not have to die.  According to Venerable Mary of Agreda’s, The Mystical City of God, our Lord Jesus Christ asked His Mother when She was 72 years old if She wanted to die, as it was time for Her to leave this earth.  She asked to die, in order to imitate Her Son perfectly.  Then, on the third day after Her Sacred Death, our Lord returned Her Sacred Soul to Her Sacred, Incorrupt Body and gloriously assumed Her, Body and Soul, into Heaven to take Her Place at His Right Hand.  There, She reigns as Queen of Heaven and earth and of the universe, as The Mother of God.  When it comes right down to it, it makes perfect sense to believe that The Blessed Virgin Mary never sinned — God and sin do not mix.  If our Blessed Lady had had original sin or any other sin on Her Soul, God The Son would NEVER have taken The Form of a Human Baby in Her Womb.  There is no time in Heaven, and God sees everything:  past, present, and future, at the same time.  Thus, He knew from all eternity that His Son would take The Form of a Human, to live, suffer, and die on a Cross, to redeem the human race.  Therefore, He decided, when He created The Blessed Virgin Mary in Her Mother’s Womb, to apply The Infinite Merits of His Son’s Most Sacred Death on The Cross, to Her, thus redeeming Her in advance, from original sin.  God also confirmed Her in grace, as are the Saints in Heaven, so that, even though She had free will and could choose between different good actions to perform, She could not sin and betray Him, as Eve had done.  The Blessed Virgin Mary is The New Eve.  As God The Son decided to come to earth through The Blessed Virgin Mary, and not come as an independent adult, He appreciates it very much when we go to Him, through Her, His closest Ambassador/Intercessor for us in Heaven.  Since we sin, our Lord hears our prayers, but our sin muffles them.  When we ask His Mother to petition Her Son, our Lord, for us, She purifies our prayers and makes them more acceptable to Him.  He often grants our requests because we go through His Mother, our Heavenly Mother.  (some taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary).

THE  CORONATION/IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, AUGUST 22NDNOVENA BEGINS AUGUST 13TH:

SALVE, REGINA/HAIL, HOLY QUEEN

In Latin:

In English:

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.  To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;  to Thee do we sigh, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.  Ah then, our Advocate, turn Thine Eyes of Mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us The Blessed Fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus.  O Merciful, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary!

AN ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

O Heart of Mary, I offer, I consecrate to Thee my heart; Thou shalt ever be the object of my veneration, love, and confidence; I will pay Thee my devotions every day; I will celebrate Thy Feasts with joy; I will proclaim Thy greatness and Thy goodness without ceasing; I will neglect no means of obtaining Thee the honor and the homage, which are due unto Thee; I will bring all of the thoughts and affections of my heart into conformity with Thine; and I will make it my duty to imitate Thy Virtues, especially Thy Purity and Thy Humility.  Vouchsafe, O Mary, to open to me Thy Heart, and to receive me therein, in union with all of Thy dear and faithful children.  Obtain for me the grace I need to imitate Thee, as Thou hast imitated Jesus Christ; succor me in all dangers, console me in all afflictions, and teach me how to make a holy use of all of the goods and ills of life.  Amen. May The Divine Heart of Jesus, The Immaculate Heart of Mary [and The Compassionate Heart of Joseph] be always, and in all places, acknowledged, praised, blessed, loved, and faithfully honored and glorified.  Amen.”

CHILD MARY / MARIA BAMBINA’S BIRTHDAY:  September 8th:  Novena begins August 30th:

(Those, who wish to become pregnant or are expecting, should pray to Maria Bambina.   More prayers for this Novena can be found under “Seasonal Novenas”.)

O Holy Child Mary of the Royal House of David, Queen of the Angels, Mother of Grace and Love, I greet Thee with all of my heart.  Obtain for me the grace to love The Lord faithfully during all of the days of my life.  Obtain for me, too, a great devotion to Thee, who art the First Creature of God’s Love.      Hail, Mary, Full of grace; The Lord Is with Thee.  Blessed art Thou among women, and Blessed Is The Fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus.  /  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

O Heavenly Child Mary, who like a Pure Dove was born Immaculate and              Beautiful, True Prodigy of The Wisdom of God, my soul rejoices in Thee.  Oh!  Do help me to preserve the angelic Virtue of Purity at the cost of any                     sacrifice.     Hail, Mary, Full of grace…

Hail, Lovely and Holy Child, Spiritual Garden of Delight, where, on the day of The Incarnation, The Tree of Life was planted, assist me to avoid the                   poisonous fruit of vanity and pleasures of the world.  Help me to engraft into my soul The Thoughts, Feelings, and Virtues of Thy Divine Son.     Hail, Mary, Full of grace…

Hail, Admirable Child Mary, Mystical Rose, ClosedGarden, open only to Thy Heavenly Spouse.  O Lily of Paradise, make me love the humble and hidden life; let Thy Heavenly Spouse find the gate of my heart always open to The Loving Calls of His Graces and Inspiration.     Hail, Mary, Full of grace…

O Holy Child Mary, Mystical Dawn, Gate of Heaven, Thou art my Trust and my Hope.  O Powerful Advocate, from Thy Cradle, stretch out Thy Hand, support me on the path of life.  Make me serve God with ardor and constancy until death and so reach an eternity with Thee.     Hail, Mary, Full of grace…

O Blessed Child Mary, destined to be The Mother of God and our Loving Mother, by the heavenly graces, which Thou lavish upon us, mercifully listen to my supplications.  In the needs, which press upon me from every side and especially in my present tribulation, I place all of my trust in Thee (mention your petition(s)).  O Holy Child, by the privileges granted to Thee alone and by the merits, which Thou hast acquired, show that the source of spiritual favors and the continuous Benefits, which Thou dispense, are inexhaustible, because Thy Power with The Heart of God is unlimited.  Deign, through the immense profusion of graces with which The Most High hath enriched Thee from the first moment of Thine Immaculate Conception, grant me, O                   Celestial Child, my petition, and I shall eternally praise the Goodness of Thine Immaculate Heart.  Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows:  September 15th; Novena begins September 6th:

O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ: by the overwhelming grief Thou experiencedst when Thou witnessedst The Martyrdom, The Crucifixion, and The Death of Thy Divine Son, look upon me with eyes of compassion and awaken in my heart a tender compassion for those suffering, as well as a sincere detestation of my sins, in order that, being disengaged from all undue affections for the passing joys of this earth, I may long for the Eternal Jerusalem, and that henceforth all of my thoughts and all of my actions may be directed toward this one most desirable object.

Honor, Glory, and Love to our Divine Lord Jesus, and to The Holy and Immaculate Mother of God. Amen.”

OUR LADY OF RANSOM/MERCY:  September 24th; Novena begins September 15th:

THE MEMORARE:

Amen.

Remember, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone, who fled to Thy Protection, implored Thy Help, or sought Thine Intercession, was left unaided.  Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto Thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to Thee do I come, before Thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful;  O Mother of The Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in Thy Mercy hear and answer me. (Raccolta #339)

SALVE, REGINA / HAIL, HOLY QUEEN

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, hail, our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope.  To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve:  to Thee do we sigh, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.  Ah, then, our Advocate, turn Thine Eyes of Mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us The Blessed Fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus, O Merciful, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary! (ex. Brevarium Romano & Raccolta #332)
